Batman is developer Traveller’s Tales fifth outing in the LEGO series and the previous games in this genre have proven to be successful. LEGO Batman is different however in that it is the first not to be based on a movie or even a comic book. As it is an original story this game can follow its own path making the scope almost limitless.

Although this sounds exciting at the end of the day the scripting is a little disappointing as it basically revolves around a bunch of bad guys escaping Arkham Asylum with Batman having to hunt them down. It really is that straightforward and will probably suit the audience because the Lego games are a simple mixture of escapism and retro yet addictive gameplay.

I thought this was the 4th Lego game? Starwars, Starwars the originals, Indiana Jones and now Batman. Which one am I missing?

Anyway, sitting playing one of the lego games has became compulsory sunday afternoon fare for me and the wife. She's not really into computer games outside of her DS (animal crossing and harvestmoon) but she'll quite happily pick up a 360 pad and wile away the hours collecting red lego bricks and striving for that superhero/true jedi achievement. If you need a starting point for getting your partner involved in your hobby then I can well recommend any of the TT Lego games.

Now to my own admission, despite being 30 years old and a more serious gamer I love the escapism and fun these Lego games bring. Sure you can dash through the levels on any of them pretty quickly and the end of level bosses are never more than a few minutes of figuring out the set piece, however the true fun lies in opening up the freeplay game mode and completing the same level 2 or 3 times using all the available characters to unlock the unique bonuses or to reach those formerly impossible to reach parts.

Lego Batman is filled with afore mentioned challenges, first you'll complete a level with Batman and Robin, you then open up the option of transferring to Arkham Aylum which lets you see the level from a whole new perspective and play as Clayface, the riddler, poison ivy etc. Don't worry though the level design is not just replayed as these characters but as a new level which just happens to cross the hero path at a few points leading to some oooooh I recognise that bit moments.

Personally I think the review score is a little too low and is based on the reviewers previous experience with the Lego games. To someone approaching the games for the first time I think this is an excellent starting point and due to the options, co-op play and longevity it is well worthy of a 90+%. For those who have played before, the only advantage you will have is knowing the format and layout of the game though even this has been changed with the villain mode. As a lego pro i'd rate this 85+%+
